Tenure

A temporary professional employee (TPE) attains tenure and becomes a professional employee upon the successful completion of a three-year probationary period which must all be served in the same school district.

Under the current law, a professional employee needs to earn tenure only once in Pennsylvania and thereafter holds that status in all Pennsylvania school districts in which they are hired.

A TPE can attain tenure by working part-time. However, service as a substitute teacher does not count toward the probationary period for tenure.
